Welcome to the show, this episode/show/thing is just an
introduction, get to hear my voice see if you like the
concept. We plan to tell you what we are here to cover,
what we aren’t going to cover. If you have comments,
thoughts, suggestions, offerings of undying devotion,
or hate mail you can send it to:
This episode will cover why Buffy matters in the world
outside of Sunnydale. Names to know are Walter Fisher
and his Narrative paradigm. The audio is a little iffy
because of some mic problems they'll be fixed by
episode 3 (I hope).
This episode deals with Season 1 only and focuses on
the concepts of Law & Authority in BtVS. We'll be
talking mostly about Flutie, Snyder, Giles and a little
bit about Cordelia. This episode also deals with a
sociologist Max Weber who gives us our working
definitions of "authority", if you have some questions
there is a good site in Linkage and here is a basic
description of Weber's types of Authority.
I promised it Tuesday and here it is! Joyce and The
Master are both covered in this podcast and I think the
two of them share special outcast status in the BtVS
authority structure. I will cover that more in the
episode but I feel like neither of them function very
effectively as authority figures and in the case of the
master he leads through power not authority. Power and
power relationships in Buffy is really a huge issue and
something that we will be talking about in bits and
pieces the whole time we have this podcast going so I
only briefly touched on it here.
Allrighty here it is at long last the episode dealing
with Season 2. I spent some time talking about the
forces of Evil and their concepts of Authority through
Spike, Angelus and The Anointed One. I think I will put
one of the clips I did not include in the episode into
the Library so look for that in the next day or so.
This podcast comes in around 45 minutes so it's a touch
longer but not obnoxious. I also cover Joyce's growth
in S2 as well as Giles. I left off Mrs. Calendar and
Snyder as I didn't feel they had a strong impact
authority wise in the season, at least not more than
they ever did. if you have thoughts on that please feel
free to chew me out on the forums.
Hey all, I have decided to push Back L&O 3 in order
to get some thoughts from you our gentle viewers. In
re-watching Season 3 I think there is going to need to
be a re-definition of authority starting in season 3
and moving forward. The Professor in the forums
(L&O 2 Feedback) has really hit on a new way for us
to do this and I think that his wiggins with Weber is
entirely justified. This is a message to all of you to
come to the forums and really talk to us about how you
want us to do with this show. You can discuss the model
for authority, you can talk about the format of the
show, you can say my voice sounds funny. I want to hear
what everyone thinks and this seemed like a great time
to pause for reflection. If I get a great response form
everyone we will make changes according to the feedback
and get back on trucking if we have a harder time
getting feedback then I will sit down with the
listeners who come forward and develop something that
suits this smaller group. If you like the show how it
is let me know, if you want something more focused on
forum discussions, okay. If you want something more
along the lines of what Buffycast used to do, talking
about story arcs and continuity we can do more of that.
I originally made this to compliment Buffycast but
since Revello hasn't been seen or heard from in several
months I think we may want to re-consider some of our
content. I didn't want to do what the Buffcast does
which is a recitation of plot lines. But as we come up
on Season 3 I am looking at a season that may require
several hours of discussion and trying to find the
right angle to come at it from without making it boring
is proving to be a challenge. I also don't want to use
Weber if he isn't working for people as a set of
definitions. So please, chime in, be heard and make a
difference.
Allrighty folks here it is at long last, weighing in
around 15mb and 1 hour long the first of several
podcasts dedicated to discussing authority and power in
BtVS season 3. This episode covers in some detail the
systems of power and authority based largely on the
discussions in the forums. Thank you all for your
feedback on this I think it has made a really excellent
show. This episode has tried to do a brief (VERY brief)
chronological overview of the season to get a flavor
for where the shifts in authority occur. I apologize if
it feels rushed and a little like BuffCast I assure you
we will be covering a LOT more on this season. I plan
to talk about the Mayor at length the relationships
between Faith and both the mayor and the Scoobies and
the influences of a corrupted system on the season as a
whole. So we have at least one more full length episode
(~60 min),a or 2-3 shorter ones (~30min) that I want to
get out weekly (time willing).
It's all about Faith this episode. Special end Music is
Faith/Fame (Remix By Abraham/Durst) which appears on
Limp Bizkit's "New Old Songs"
This one is all about the mayor. This episode is our
first in a good long while and so I apologize if it is
a little scattered. I did this one without a lot of
reviewing and outlining so it's more free form. Hope
everyone enjoys it.
This episode deals with authority and the relationships
Maggie Walsh has with our characters. There are some
real substantive issues here, ideas of good and evil,
concepts of emotionalattachment as a form of compliance
gaining, real good stuff.
This episode, focused on Season 4 deals with the ideas
of institutions and thier roles in social authority. A
lot of the show deals with how the writers have
protrayed the hierarchies of our world in a rather
unpleasant light.
I was really pleased that I had enough material to
really do a solid Season 5 episode. I spend some time
dealing with Harmony as a big bad and her style of
leadership as well as the divine paradigm that Joss
& Co. set up with Glory and the Crusaders as well
as some discussion about Buffy in her new role as big
sister. Tied to the discussion about Buffy as big
sister there are some references to Kenneth Burke, for
some general info on him this Wikipedia article is very
helpful.
This deals with 2 large issues in Season 6: the Trio
& the Commodification of Power. I had thought about
discussing the ideas of drugs (Willow's Magic) as a
form of control, the re-definition of Giles' authority,
and Xander's Authority as the best friend. But all of
those seemed like smaller issues that might not be
worth dealing with. If you'd like to discuss them let
me know and I will do a 6.2.
Thanks so much to Revan for posting such an insightful
and thought provoking post on the forums. This episode
deals with 3 issues: Willow as an authority (Rites
& Responsibilities), Giles' Lack of Ethos in S6 and
Xander's Authority from Weakness. All three of these
issues are pretty juicy and I think there will be a lot
more for Giles to be doing in L&O 7 but for now
we're tracing the shift that rendered him so inert
during S6.
